For the first time in nearly 60 years, you can now have direct flights from China to Taiwan. Taiwan separated from China after the communists victory in the Chinese civil war in 1949. Tensions still continue between China and Taiwan though. Taiwan’s last president Chen Shui-bian supported independence for the island therefore China refused to negotiate since Beijing still considers China to be part of them and has said to declare war if Taiwan should be independent. Taiwan elected a new President, Ma Ying-jeou, who took office in May. President Ma does not advocate independence therefore has closer relations to China.
