Backpacking is cutting travel costs, but not cutting the exciting elements of adventure. Travel in style; to distinctive places and to have fun doing so!

Great article, I am planning on going to Italy next year with some friends who are refusing to stay in a hostel. I don't think they have a clue what they are missing out on. After they head back for the states, and while I strike it out on my own, I'll be staying in hostels.

I worked at the hostel in that second photo! I'd recognize it anywhere. What's even more amazing is that that photo was taken 2 days after I left. Had it been taken 2 days before, you'd see me sitting at the bar in the upper righthand corner of the photo. Small world.

I agree with #3 (the advice you get) completely. The communal wisdom of the backpacking community is rich, accurate, and reliable. Hands down, backpackers are the most reliable source of information out there. This is a very good point, Grant.

If you're going to Tulum you should stay in the cabanas on the beach... it's too nice to pass up. There is a hostel in town called the Weary Traveler and it is a great spot. I've spent some time there and if you have an extra night you should check it out for the social scene. Other than that, spend most of your time on the beach. It's one of my favorite places in the world.
