“Chance is always powerful. Let your hook be always cast; in the pool, where you least expect, there will be a fish.” – Ovid

On August 24th, 2010 – I leave for Xi’an, China. I signed a ten month contract to teach English at a University. I’ve been on the road for over one year and three months and still going strong.

This will be quite different from what I’ve been use to. My longest stay was four months volunteering in Buenos Aires. It’s also been four months back in the United States but I’ve still been traveling between different states. This being ten months, I’ll be fully immersing myself with the culture more so than any other destination has before.

I had only been back in the US a few weeks before I decided to leave again. The travel bug has forever infected me making this trip completely random and unexpected.

The process was easy. All I did was send out emails to a few online ads. I don’t have a degree nor certified with TEFL but they accepted me regardless. Determination is all it took. From what I’ve been told, the demand for English teachers in China is high. The pay isn’t the greatest compared to Korea or Japan but enough to live well in China and still save.

I’ll be documenting my experience here on Art of Backpacking.

Are you coming to China in the next year? Stopping in Xi’an? You’re more than welcome to stay at my place or if you’d like to meet up for dinner or drinks. Let me know!

Life is good…

Congrats, Michael! Can’t wait to hear about your adventures. I’m amazed that you got a university teaching position without any kind of experience.

Hope to see you in Thailand this Christmas!

How exciting! Best of luck with it – just goes to show that persistence and determination really do pay off. Looking forward to reading some tips about what to see and do in Xi’an!

I was surprised as well. Pretty good gig though!

Yes, a Thailand meetup would be awesome. We’ll plan that out better when it gets closer.

Muchisima gracias!!! Well, Chinese was my major in College. I grew up
learning German, as my Mom is German. And Spanish, well I have a thing for
    Latin men, hahahaha. :)
