Sounds like what happened to my boyfriend and I in India! Sometimes hand gestures or broken English. It was definitely quite surprising at first!

[...] As I’m casually talking to my students, I notice a few of them on their cell phones. They were trying to be very discrete about it. It’s my first day teaching and I didn’t think to tell them to put it away but as I paid more attention, all the phones were facing me. *Click* – The exact sound of a picture being taken. They were taking pictures of me. No joke, there was one student that poked a hole through several sheets of paper to take a picture. This isn’t the first time I’ve had pictures taken of me in China. [...]

I totally get into it when I catch them taking a picture of me. I hold up peace signs and strike a pose. Always gets a laugh and conversation.

This is interesting for me to happen upon because on the way home I just finished a conversation about this with my husband and friend. We spent the day walking around various parts of Beijing, and I out of the corner of my eye I noticed several cameras pointed at me at different times throughout the day. People would try and sneak photos with their cameras, or when I turned they would point them somewhere else. Others just flat out walked right up and took pictures without asking. Very strange indeed, but we realized we take living in America for granted. Never would I think to take a picture of someone who looks different than me because I am so used to being surrounded by such diversity. At one point I just started smiling or holding up peace signs for people. Better that than risking them catching me making a face!

I can't imagine how much attention a baby would get especially in Japan. I did have a few strange pictures taken of me in the most random moments sometimes without even warning me.

The trains are fantastic. It's much much cheaper than flights. The system isn't that hard to get around either. Usually the place you stay at can take care of it for you and even deliver the ticket to you. The beds are very good and you'll meet some very nice folks on the train. Highly recommend them. You get on the train, sleep, and suddenly you're in a new city. Save on looking for a place to sleep and you get into a new city!
