I usually don’t write many personal entries here, not really sure why as it does seem it’d draw some good attention so today I was in the mood to do so. Most of the time, all my randomness is posted on Twitter or on my other more personal blog. Not too long ago though, I made the announcement that I’ll be going to Xi’an, China to teach English for a year starting in August. It’s was on my mind for awhile and always known I’d be going back to China. I’ve been back in the United States for nearly two months since my 11 month round-the-world backpacking trip. It didn’t seem to take long before I decided to leave for Asia again though. There’s just something about Asia that draws me to it.

Art of Backpacking has been up since December 2008 and it’s growth has been much more then I had ever expected. There’s now not enough hours in a day to keep up with everything. Thank you to everyone who’s made this website what it is today. We have several contributors now and it continues to grow at a rapid rate. I have met some wonderful people thanks to this website and I’ll be forever grateful to have so many people supporting it.

Next, I’m leaning over to the film world. I’m purchasing several pieces of equipment before TBEX and perhaps do a bit of recording of the event. Eventually, this will all come together as AOB’s Videocast. If you have any suggestions on what gear to buy, let me know. The whole thing is in the extreme early stages but I suspect within the next few weeks, we’ll have something put together with our first video. I’ve got to admit though, I was a bit inspired by the Without Borders chefs. Since I’ll be going back to Asia, this is the perfect opportunity to get some really awesome footage. I’m completely new to the field and I plan to provide tips, tricks, and more on filming abroad as I learn as well. So if you catch me with a camcorder at TBEX, be sure to say hello and say a few words.

Safe travels.

Great stuff Mike! And perhaps we can collaborate on some shooting during TBEX – would be great for a “Meet, Plan, Go” video!

I like the odd personal update on even the most professional and focused of travel blogs. It puts a face behind the author.

Exciting moving into the filming – it's an excellent way to bring a whole new perspective to the places we travel. I'm considering a stint teaching Engish in Asia in the coming months (probably 6) but am leaning towards South Korea. Would love any advice you have.

Happy travels, and have fun at TBEX.

Great to hear! I am sure you will have a fantastic time in China! Thanks for the mention and we are so happy to hear that we gave some sort of inspiration to you. HUGE compliment! Good luck on the filming and anything you need, please ask.
I know what you mean about Asia as every time I save a bit of money, I end up blowing it on a trip to Asia! Can't wait to go back.
    All the best to you!
