What to Expect From Your Hostel Stay in a Foreign City

November 15, 2017 admin

what to expect from your hostel stay in a foreign city

For a traveler who has a limited budget and wants to have maximum experience of their tour, hostels are among the cheapest accommodation they can get with an opportunity to interact with people from different places staying at the same place. Not every hostel is same and you will get to meet many people from around the world. Every hostel you will stay at will leave you with a different experience, both unique and bizarre. For starters, here are the things you should know in general about staying at hostels.

· Do not expect privacy

Privacy is the last thing you should expect in hostels. You get to share a room with three to four people at a time. There will always be someone coming in or leaving late at night when you’re trying to catch some sleep. Moreover, it might be a bit uncomfortable for you if you like to stay alone since there will always be someone who would want to start a conversation.

· Do not hesitate to socialize

The moment you sign in a hostel, drop your guards there and be ready to mingle with people. Staying at hostels is a great opportunity to get to know people from all across the world, coming from different cultures and with unique stories to share. Hostel stays are great for learning new things and making new friends and it is less likely that you will feel any homesickness with so many people around you.

· Be prepared for unwanted disturbances

Party noises from across the room, late night ravings, or your roommate snoring – there will always be unwelcomed noises that will disturb you at night. When packing for your trip, do not forget to keep earplugs and eye masks to filter out these unwanted disturbances.

· Have a hostel-survival kit with you

Many hostels you will find will not offer toiletries and if they do, you might have to pay an extra fee for them. For your convenience, pack your own set of towels, small soap, shampoo and flip-flops. You cannot expect washrooms to be clean all the time, and sometimes they will make you feel dirtier after having a shower there. Moreover, you will most likely have to share the bathroom with the entire floor as hostels rarely have separate bathrooms for each room.

· Your hostel staff is your local guide

Hostel staff is a great source to gain information about local attractions. They know where most of the parties are happening, the coolest cafés to visit and where to order the best pizza from. Do not be shy to ask them what is happening around the city.

· Hostel kitchens lets you save a few dollars

Hostels have communal kitchen and this is a good option for those who want to save some money by not eating out every night. They can cook their own meals. However, these kitchens are often dirty and crowded during the peak hours, which is why you should better stick to simpler dishes which you can cook in less time and schedule your eating hours accordingly, so you can find the kitchen empty.

Extra tip – Always keep a multilingual language guide with you as not everyone you meet will be speaking your language. So, to have better communication, it is good to be prepared beforehand.
