No matter what age you are, finally having enough money to travel to a foreign land is one of the best experiences and feelings, especially since it builds character and gives you the opportunity to see how different people really are around the world. It gives you a break from the humdrum routine, and allows you to breathe the air of a completely new place. Not to mention, cultural diversity is something that everyone needs to experience on their own – it helps maintain a peaceful, healthy and open mindset.
However, you can’t base a judgment on any country other than the one you have lived in yourself. You might hear people labeling one country to be “safer” than the other, but this is rarely ever the case because criminals are based in all parts of the world. At the end of the day, if you aren’t alert or careful in a place you aren’t familiar with, the possibility of getting assaulted certainly exists.
As long as you plan your trip well and follow these tips, you’ll stay safe regardless of the place that you travel to:
1. Make Copies of Important Documents
Make multiple copies of your passport and other information that are useful to you, and useful for the purpose of tracking you if anything was to happen to you. Hand copies to either your family members or close friends so they know what to do in case you go missing. Also, when in a foreign place, you must keep a close eye on your passport – so, keep the real thing hidden away and carry the copies if need be. Anything that you do carry, keep close to your body, such as in a small waist bag. Store some cash under your shoe sole to act as emergency money when necessary.
2. Learn the Language
When you travel to a destination where the natives speak a language that is entirely new to you, learn the language before you even get there. Not only will this help you communicate easily with the natives, it’ll also help you understand other conversations. Most kidnappers take advantage of the fact that tourists do not understand their language, hence, they speak freely of their plans.
3. Stay Extra Alert At Night
Partying in other parts of the world is enjoyable and gives you a taste of how people in other parts of the world like to have fun. If you intend to test out the nightlife in the destination of your choice, do some research on the places that you’ll be going to. Always remember to leave before its midnight – better safe than sorry.
4. Make Smart Choices
Another tip worth mentioning is if you plan to drink, do not get wasted. Do not leave your drink – even water – unattended, and do not accept drinks from strangers. Always, always leave in a taxi to your abode. Never give your personal information and do not carpool with strangers. Follow your instincts at all times.
5. Use Google Maps At All Times
No matter how tired you feel, do not close your eyes until you get home. Use the Google Maps app or any other alternative to get from one place to another. If you don’t have access to the internet, search for the location beforehand and take screenshots to help you commute easily.
Have a safe trip!
